"Fake Tan, Real Cancer" - the headline on Web MD Health caught my eye. It's talking about the ultraviolet light from tanning salons being at least as likely to cause skin cancer as good old-fashioned sunlight because ultraviolet rays (UV) are ultraviolet rays, no matter the source. Monthly use of a tanning bed, says the new study, raises the risk of malignant melanoma 55%, regardless of any factor - age, skin color, hair color, etc.

So ultraviolet rays harm us whatever the source, and whether it's "fake" or "real." This is much like anger! We know that anger kills, whatever the source, and whether it's "fake" or "real."

Bill, for instance, is headed for a heart attack. When he gets together with his buddies to "relax" after work, he goes over each stressful and anger-provoking event of his day (or month, or even way back in time). These are "war stories." He also invest former football games, and current political events with the same power to stress him out.

Studies show that when an individual relates a stressful, anger-producing event from the past, his or her body acts exactly the way it did when the event actually occurring. In other words, there you are in the tanning bed, reproducing the rays of the sun. Our bodies do not know the difference. The "fake" event causes the same anger, the same increase in levels of cortisol and other manifestations of stress as the "real" event would, and does just as much damage to our bodies.

So, how about a better way? Learn some Emotional Intelligence. Learn something else to do with anger besides expressing it or repressing it.
